Daniel Jones Benched as Giants Name Tommy DeVito Starting Quarterback
Daniel Jones is no longer the starting quarterback for the New York Giants. Head coach Brian Daboll announced on Monday that Jones has been benched, with second-year quarterback Tommy DeVito set to start in the upcoming game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Jones has been demoted to third-string quarterback, while Drew Lock will remain as the team’s backup.
“We are making a quarterback switch from Daniel Jones to Tommy DeVito,” Daboll explained. “After evaluating and watching a lot of tape, this is the direction we’re taking. Drew Lock will serve as the backup. This was a necessary move, and I’m looking forward to working with Tommy. He’ll be ready to go against Tampa Bay.”
Jones, the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, showed promise during a breakout 2022 season that saw him lead the Giants to the Divisional Round. His performance led the team to sign him to a lucrative four-year, $160 million contract extension.
Unfortunately, the investment has not paid off. The Giants are currently 2-8, and Jones has struggled. He missed most of the 2023 season with a torn ACL and has underwhelmed in 2024, completing 63.3% of his passes for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 10 games.
DeVito, an undrafted free agent in 2023, provided a spark while filling in for Jones last season. He won his first three starts before losing the next three, throwing for 1,101 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions during that stretch. The Giants hope DeVito can replicate that success and energize the team as they prepare to face Tampa Bay.
