Cleveland Cavaliers forward Emoni Bates announced via social media that he suffered a “slight tear” in his meniscus and recently underwent surgery. Despite the setback, Bates remained optimistic, sharing that he will come back “stronger and better.”
The No. 49 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Bates split much of his rookie season between the G League and the Cavs, playing in 15 games for Cleveland and averaging 2.7 points, 0.9 rebounds, and 0.7 assists per game while shooting 30.6 percent from the field and 30.3 percent from beyond the arc.
With the Cavs retaining Isaac Okoro and drafting Jaylon Tyson in the first round, Bates was unlikely to break into the team’s rotation for the 2024-25 season. However, the 20-year-old forward has shown potential, especially during his time in the G League. He averaged 19.8 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game in the regular season and an impressive 24.8 points per game in 10 Showcase Cup contests, showcasing his 3-point shooting as a standout skill.

While the Cavaliers aim for an NBA title in the upcoming season under new head coach Kenny Atkinson, Bates’ timeline for return remains uncertain. The Cavs have preseason matchups against the Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, and Detroit Pistons, with the regular season set to begin on October 23 against the Toronto Raptors.
