The New York Giants have effectively conceded the season after parting ways with starting quarterback Daniel Jones, despite absorbing a massive financial loss in the process. Now, the team’s best-case scenario might be to finish with a poor record, secure a high draft pick, and select their quarterback of the future. However, even with assurances from ownership, head coach Brian Daboll’s job may be on the line if the Giants endure a winless (or near-winless) stretch to close out the year after starting 2-8.

“I would say that [Giants general manager] Joe Schoen is probably safer right now than Brian Daboll,” Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz reported on November 20. “As it’s been made clear to me, Brian is coaching for his job over the last seven weeks.”

Schoen shares significant responsibility with Daboll for the team’s struggles. His decision to extend Jones on a four-year, $160 million deal in March 2023, coupled with the choice not to retain star running back Saquon Barkley this offseason, have proven costly for the Giants’ offense. Despite this, Daboll is the one under intense scrutiny, and he may push for an upgrade at quarterback to improve the team’s performance over the remainder of the season. Relying on Tommy DeVito or Drew Lock under center seems unlikely to inspire much success.

To turn things around, the Giants could focus on maximizing the potential of rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers by bringing in a veteran quarterback skilled at utilizing top-tier pass catchers. Among available options, Ryan Tannehill stands out as a practical choice. Meanwhile, Aaron Rodgers’ potential availability could be a game-changer. The Athletic‘s Dianna Russini reported on November 23 that Rodgers is unhappy with the New York Jets and may leave the organization soon, possibly even before the end of the current season.

“I’m told no decisions have been made yet, but it appears increasingly likely that the four-time MVP, who is banged up, could be placed on injured reserve or benched over the next few weeks, signaling the end of his disastrous time with the Jets,” Russini wrote. “Some around the league say they won’t be surprised if Rodgers is cut in-season.”

If Rodgers becomes available, the Giants should act quickly—assuming their goal is to win a few games over their final seven matchups. With a 2-8 record, Rodgers wouldn’t jeopardize their chances of landing a top-10 draft pick in 2025. As it stands, the Giants would pick third overall if the draft were held today, a position likely to yield one of the nation’s best quarterback prospects.

Rodgers could serve as a short-term solution for the Giants, helping them salvage morale, stabilize the offense, and potentially save Daboll’s job. He could then transition into a bridge quarterback role in 2025 while a talented rookie prepares to take over. This plan could offer the franchise a chance to rebuild and regain prominence, with Rodgers leading a competitive team in the interim.
